Meeting recordings pick up more noise than you'd think

A laptop fan, a passing car, someone typing notes in the same room, the hum of an old monitor — none of it is obvious while you're on the call, but it's all there in the recording. How to clean up a call recording

What CleanGrab won't fix in a call recording

Video-call rooms are notorious for echo — a voice bouncing off a hard-walled room, or a speaker sitting too close to their own speakers. Heavy room echo and reverb are a harder, separate problem: CleanGrab reduces light echo, but it will not fully erase a very reverberant room. We'd rather say that plainly than promise something the tool can't do.

CleanGrab is tuned for voice and speech — podcasts, interviews, calls, voice memos, lectures. On music or other non-speech audio the result can be poor, and the tool will tell you when it couldn't detect clear speech instead of handing you a mangled file.

How you recorded the call decides what can be fixed

Meeting recordings are not all the same file, and this is the difference between a good result and a mediocre one. Check which of these you have before anything else:

• A local recording with separate audio files per participant. Both major platforms can be configured to write one audio file per speaker alongside the combined recording. This is the jackpot: clean each speaker's file individually and you get a result no single mixed track can match, because the noise in each track is different and gets treated on its own terms. If you have the option, turn it on before your next call.
• A local recording, single mixed track. Perfectly workable — one upload, done.
• A cloud recording. Already compressed and already processed by the platform (see below), so you're cleaning something that has been through a mill. Still an improvement, but the ceiling is lower.
• A phone or laptop recording of the room while the call played on speakers. The hardest case: you've captured the room's echo on top of everything, and reverb is reduced rather than removed.

The platform processed it first, and that limits what's left

Video-call software applies its own automatic gain control, noise gating and echo cancellation in real time, tuned for intelligibility on a bad connection rather than for a clean archive. That leaves fingerprints which are not noise and therefore aren't going anywhere:

• Pumping. Automatic gain makes the background swell up between sentences and duck when someone speaks. Removing the background largely hides it, but the level still breathes.
• Words fading in. The platform's gate cuts audio until it's confident someone is speaking, so the first syllable is sometimes just missing. It can't be restored — it was never recorded.
• Packet-loss stutters and robot artefacts. That's data lost in transit, not noise in the room.
• Two people talking at once. Both are speech, so both are preserved. Nothing separates them.

What does clean up beautifully is everything the platform left in: a fan or air conditioner in someone's office, keyboard clatter from a participant who took notes, traffic through an open window, and the general electrical hiss of a cheap laptop microphone.

Practical note if you have the video: upload the whole video file rather than extracting the audio first. The picture is copied through untouched — no re-encode, no quality loss, no sync drift — and you get the same file back with clean sound, ready to share. A call up to an hour long fits in one job.
