Best free noise removal tools how many free hours you really get

These do genuinely different jobs — the word "noise" hides four separate problems:

• A recording that already exists, with hum, fans or traffic — CleanGrab or Adobe Podcast Enhance. Adobe's is excellent on voice but reshapes the sound quite aggressively; ours aims to leave the voice as it was and take the noise away. The full comparison is on our Adobe Podcast alternative page.
• Noise on a live call — Krisp. It sits between your microphone and the app, so the other side hears you clean. Nothing else on this list does that.
• A whole podcast episode that also needs levelling — Auphonic, which does loudness targets and levelling as well. Watch the 2 hours a month.
• Ums, stutters and mouth clicks — Cleanvoice, or our own filler-word removal in ScribeGrab. That is editing, not noise reduction.
• Full manual control, offline — Audacity. Free forever, and the only one here where you decide exactly how much gets removed.

Every tool on this list, ours included, works by separating speech from everything else. That works well for steady noise — a fan, an air conditioner, traffic hum, mains hum. It works poorly for two things, and no amount of AI changes that:

1. Room echo. A recording made in an empty room with hard walls has the voice smeared across the reverb. Removing that means removing part of the voice. Tools that promise to fix it usually just make it sound thinner.
2. Another voice. A person talking in the background is speech, so a speech-preserving model preserves it. That is a mixing problem, not a noise problem.

The fix for both is at the recording end: closer microphone, softer room, and a few seconds of silence at the start so the tool can hear what the noise sounds like on its own.

We opened each tool's own pricing or product page on 6 August 2026 and wrote down the free allowance, the account requirement and what it operates on. We did not run one noisy recording through six tools and rank the output: noise reduction is a matter of taste as much as measurement — some people want the noise gone at any cost to the voice, others the opposite.
