Room echo is a small slice of what actually comes through CleanGrab. In the 31 days to 21 August, 43 recordings were processed sitewide across all of CleanGrab's cleanup tools — and 37 of those, the clear majority, went through the general background-noise remover rather than a page aimed specifically at echo. That matches what we'd expect: most people don't search for "reverb" or "room echo" by name, they just notice a recording still sounds hollow after the fan noise and hum are already gone. We're not going to inflate that 37-of-43 split into a sweeping claim about noisy audio versus echoey audio in general — it's just what came through one small tool's logs in one month, and a reminder that most of what lands on this page has already been through one cleanup pass before this one. It's enough, though, to explain why this page exists as its own thing rather than a setting buried in the main tool.
Room echo is really two things at once, and they are not equally fixable. There is the tail: the sound of the room carrying on after you stop talking, ringing in the gaps between words and after every sentence. And there is the smear: reflections landing on top of the words themselves while you are still speaking, blurring the consonants.
The tail is what your ear labels "echoey", and that is the part this removes. On a test recording made in a hard, empty room, the tail in the pauses came back 14 dB quieter — roughly a quarter of its former loudness — and the natural silences between words were restored to nearly the depth of a recording made in a treated room.
The smear is a much harder problem and this does not fully undo it. A very reverberant recording will come back tighter and far less hollow, but it will not sound like it was recorded in a studio. We would rather say that than promise it.
CleanGrab is tuned for voice and speech — podcasts, interviews, calls, voice memos, lectures. On music or other non-speech audio the result can be poor, and the tool will tell you when it couldn't detect clear speech instead of handing you a mangled file.
The strength control decides how much the model is allowed to pull down. For ordinary background noise, Balanced usually sounds the most natural. Echo is different: it is quieter than the voice and it lives in the gaps, so a gentle setting leaves most of it sitting there. Measured against a dry reference, Strong recovered noticeably more of the natural silence between words than Balanced did, which is why this page starts on Strong.
