How much birdsong comes out

Every 10 dB sounds roughly half as loud, so 20 dB quieter is about a quarter of the loudness. We measured this on four recordings of different birds mixed under a clean voice, so we knew exactly what the voice should sound like. That is a small test: your recording will differ, and a word that birds completely covered when you recorded it cannot be brought back.
Why birds are easier than most noise
Birdsong behind a voice came down a lot even without Voice only: in our tests the Strong setting took it down by about 56 dB on average, and Voice only went further, up to 80 dB. Barking is harder, because a bark shares pitch and rhythm with speech; see remove dog barking from video for that case.

- Interviews and vlogs outside. The voice stays, the birds behind it come down.
- A window left open. Voice memos, lectures and online calls with a garden behind them.
- A video with a clear voice-over. A video comes back as the same video with the cleaned sound; the picture is copied, not re-encoded.
When Voice only is not the right pick
- Two or more people talking at once. A second voice is speech too. In our tests with two people talking over each other, the second voice came down by only about 7 dB on average, and on two of four test recordings it lost or swapped the voice. Try Standard clean-up and listen to the result.
